Safety Training Seminars offers Self-Guided Learning™ courses for BLS, ACLS, and PALS at their Stockton location at 5250 Claremont Avenue, Suite 212. These courses combine self-paced online learning with a self-guided skills session at a CPR Verification Station™ learning center—no fixed class times, no group schedules.
Healthcare professionals at St. Joseph’s Medical Center (1800 N California St) and Dameron Hospital (525 W. Acacia St.) have found this format practical. It fits around rotating shifts and demanding clinical schedules without sacrificing training quality.
A Self-Guided Learning course for BLS, ACLS, or PALS from the American Heart Association® combines two components:
Learners complete both components independently. Upon successful completion, they receive an American Heart Association Course Completion eCard. The eCard for BLS, ACLS, and PALS serves as verification of successful training completion and meets requirements for employment, hospital credentialing, and professional licensing.
This learning approach falls under the HeartCode® Complete course pathway. It supports BLS, ACLS, and PALS training for initial and renewal learners.*
HeartCode® is a trademark of the American Heart Association.
The online component uses True Adaptive™ learning powered by Area9 Lyceum. This technology continuously assesses each learner’s knowledge and confidence, then adjusts the content path in real time.
Learners spend less time on material they already know and more time on gaps that need reinforcement. The result is a personalized, competency-focused experience that respects your schedule. You can complete it in one session or spread it across multiple sittings.
For BLS, the online learning activity takes 1–2 hours. For ACLS and PALS, it takes 2–3 hours.
The online activity must be completed before the skills session. Completing only the online portion does not result in an American Heart Association Course Completion eCard.
The self-guided skills session is completed at a CPR Verification Station learning center. Learners independently perform required psychomotor skills—compressions, ventilations, two-rescuer CPR—while the station provides real-time, objective performance feedback.
There is no live instructor or virtual coaching during this session. The CPR Verification Station learning center measures performance against American Heart Association-defined criteria. Learners may repeat the required skills activity as needed to achieve a passing score.
The skills session for BLS, ACLS, and PALS each take approximately 30 minutes.
This learning approach works well for:
The flexibility is the point. You study when it works for you, then schedule the skills session at a time that fits your week.
These are two distinct learning approaches under American Heart Association guidelines:
Using the correct terminology matters for compliance and clarity. Self-Guided Learning courses should not be labeled as blended learning, instructor-led, or RQI programs.

Booked a ACLS Renewal “course” online. The location is great - however there is NO ONE to greet, assist or open the Safety Seminars office Space. Unless you received the door instructions - this was difficult to do without assistance from an office stranger. The first Manikin took 4-5 attempts and being exhausted, was not letting me pass the Compressions/Ambu bag test. Thankfully i switched to Station B and passed the test. While it was disclaimed “No Staff will be there to assist, but you can call for customer service” - after calling there was no staff or person to help. There was a ring camera watching the station - but it seemed it didnt matter. Paying almost $250 to just do most of the work online, and do 100 percent of the “classwork” DIY was not worth it. As an “older” nurse, i still recommend to seek an in-person class facilitation.
